“Sure…” I say uncertainly on the phone.

“You’re going to have a baby …”

The nurse pauses. How cruel.

I’m holding my breath and chanting “boy boy boy” in my head. How funny.
I just told my friend, Grant, how it doesn’t matter as long as the baby is healthy and happy. What crap.

I envision her saying “boy” and I feel lighter inside. I didn’t realize how much I wanted a boy until that moment. I have two nephews; I’m more comfortable with boys; they’re easier in the long run; they usually don’t play with dolls.
